Eribel follows the advice of Accessible Flanders (Toegankelijk Vlaanderen).
The clear passage width is measured between the open door leaf and the edge of the stop bead on the door frame when the door is open at 90°. If the door opens further, the clear passage width is measured between the stops.
For a sliding door, the clear passage width covers the distance between the edge of the door leaf and the outermost edge of the door frame.
The clear passage height is measured between the floor level and the edge of the stop bead at the top of the door frame.
The minimum clear passage for escape routes in general is 850 mm (W) x 2100 mm (H).
To allow a wheelchair user or person with a stroller to easily operate the door, a clear turning circle must be available before and after each door.
When manually operating the door, the lateral maneuvering space and the position of the turning circle relative to the door are particularly important.
The lateral maneuvering space must be at least 50 mm and is measured from the outer edge of the stop bead of the door frame (on the door handle side) to the space or against a wall or object.
The position of the clear and level turning space relative to the door determines whether the user can easily operate a manual door. Greater requirements are set for the pull side of the door than the push side. The door handle must be reached first to pull the door toward the user. On the push side, less space is needed as the user can more easily follow the door’s turning direction.
The minimum clear passage for wheelchair users and people with a stroller is 900 mm (W) x 2100 mm (H).
